I just stumbled across this lesson plan for middle school and high school students to think about scenarios for UN inspections in Iraq. (The page is from 2002 - at least someone was thinking in such flexible terms.) The steps they outline are relatively generic, but largely correct:
- Brainstorm possible outcomes...
- Learn about the most recent findings...
- Create flow charts to show possible chains of events that might lead to several potential outcomes...
- Write interactive scenarios based on the flow charts designed in class.
I find it encouraging that scenario thinking is finding its way into classrooms. I also take this as a sign that scenario thinking is reaching a certain level of maturity. How long that maturity persists is another matter. If only this kind of thinking were more pervasive inside large organizations...
