Open Source Prediction Markets
Apologies for the (continued) dearth of posts. I've been traveling and preoccupied with my brother, who for the moment seems to be stabilized on his latest chemo round.
I've been hearing and thinking a lot recently, (in multiple contexts) about open source software, so I guess it shouldn't be a huge surprise that it is moving into the prediction markets realm. Ken Kittlitz at the Foresight Exchange (aka, FX), has released an open-source version of Idea Futures. It can be downloaded here. Chris Masse has a thorough roundup of this and other PM software here.
UPDATE: Mike Linksvayer has more. (HT: Masse)
Quick thought: enabling the spread of this stuff via open source will be chaotic in the short term, (many more markets spring up - both public and private; fragmentation of an already thin trading-savvy population), but immensely powerful and important in the longer term, (spurring innovation and spreading the 'gospel' of prediction markets' power and usefulness.)

Hi Art Hutchinson,
Speaking for all of your readers, I hope that your Bro will make it. We will all pray for him.
Congrats for breaking the news on OSS applied to prediction markets. (Well, actually, Mike Linksvayer beat you by one second http://gondwanaland.com/mlog/2005/08/29/open-source-prediction-market/ )
Hey, wouldn't it be nice to have a business consultant (based in Boston, maybe) testing the three solutions and rating these products?
Any taker?
